The Community Safety Department's Security Services is committed to keeping York University campuses safe for everyone. All of the Security Services personnel are trained to a high professional standard to ensure your safety and to deal with any incidents that may occur.

Campus Patrols

Security Services personnel maintain a strong presence on campus every day to build relationships and better serve the community. They actively interact with students, staff, faculty, and visitors. In addition to patrolling the campus on foot, they use patrol vehicles and, when weather permits, mountain bikes. Consequently, their visibility and accessibility enhance campus safety.

Undergraduate Residences

During the Fall and Winter Terms, Security Watch personnel are stationed overnight in undergraduate residences. Their presence helps enhance residence life by conducting proactive security patrols, managing access control, and monitoring alarms. Furthermore, they provide various safety and security services within the residences, ensuring a secure living environment for students.

Emergency Services Vehicle Escort

Security Services collaborates with emergency responders, such as firefighters, police, and paramedics. When these responders arrive on campus for emergencies, Security Services personnel meet them at the campus perimeter and escort them to their destinations. This coordination ensures a swift and efficient response to emergencies.

First Aid

Security Services offers 24-hour first aid response for individuals experiencing illness or injury. The range of first aid equipment available includes:

  • First Aid kits
  • Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)
  • Oxygen
  • Naloxone

AED Locations:

Security Control Centre

The Security Control Centre acts as the central hub for security dispatch, alarm monitoring, and closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance across York University campuses. Operating around the clock, it handles service calls and is equipped with advanced monitoring technology. For example, the video wall displays live feeds from numerous cameras, enhancing the overall security monitoring.

Investigations and Threat Assessment

The Investigations and Threat Assessment team at Security Services proactively researches upcoming events to ensure community safety while supporting York’s educational goals. They conduct non-criminal investigations, assist police with criminal investigations, and develop safety plans for at-risk individuals. By taking these measures, they help maintain a secure and supportive environment on campus.

Emergency and Safety Phones

Blue Light Emergency Phones

On campus, you will find Blue Light Emergency Phones that connect directly with Security or goSAFE. These phones are equipped with a blue light that flashes, making them highly visible when activated. Additionally, interactive maps for both the Glendon and Keele campuses are available and include the locations of these emergency phones.

Classroom Phones

In larger classrooms and auditoriums across campus, you’ll find classroom phones positioned at the front. These phones can also be used to contact Security Services directly in an emergency situation. Therefore, they provide another reliable option for seeking help when needed.

Interior Safety Phones

Moreover, Interior Safety Phones allow you to contact Security Services directly in the event of an emergency and request a goSAFE escort. You can locate these phones in all buildings on campus, and they are easily identifiable by their red Safety Phone markers. Consequently, they ensure that help is always within reach.
