Community Safety

The Community Safety Department works closely with other departments and community partners to provide services that ensure the safety of York University’s campuses.

We take a holistic and intersectional approach to safety that reflects the diverse experiences of members of our community.  We are committed to working proactively with the York community to build safe and inclusive campuses.

Building a safe community is an ongoing endeavor.  We continually strive to update our services and infrastructure to better respond to emerging safety and security concerns.  We welcome your feedback at safety@yorku.ca.

How to Report

Click below for information on reporting on campus emergencies and other safety-related incidents:

7 Reporting Tips

  1. Give your name, telephone number and location, and the nature and location of the emergency.

  2. Do not jeopardize your safety or the safety of others in attempting to save personal or University property.

  3. Before taking any action, be sure you are not endangering yourself. Avoid unstable structures, hazards, electrical wires, toxic fumes, chemical spills, fire, etc.

  4. Do not hang up until the person answering the call ends the conversation.

  5. Learn where the emergency and safety phones are located on campus.

  6. Be proactive and report any suspicious activity on campus to Security Services.

  7. If you receive a threat, either by phone or mail, immediately call Security Services.

goSAFE

goSAFE is one of the largest student employers on campus, and gives students the opportunity to give back to the York community while also earning money for their education.  goSAFE is staffed entirely by York University students and are easily identifiable in their red jackets or goSAFE and YorkU branded polo shirts.

What We Do

goSAFE teams accompany York community members to and from any on-campus location, such as the Village Shuttle pick-up hub, parking lots, bus stops or residences. They will strive to meet you at your pick-up location within 10 minutes of your call and will gladly wait with you until your bus or transportation arrives or your car starts. Please note that children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

In addition to escorting students, staff and faculty around campus, goSAFE staff conduct weekly audits of all of the on-campus exterior lighting, on-campus automatic doors, and on-campus emergency and elevator phones, reporting any malfunctions for repair.
